Canadian Railroads > 6 CP unit consist, all GMDD / EMDDate: 06/04/19 07:55 6 CP unit consist, all GMDD / EMD Author: Parkcar What's the odds that a class 1 railway (railroad to you US boys and girls) of today would mount a consist of 6 units, all GMDD, Yesterday brought an unexpected and pleasant surprise, with a southbound empty ballast train from Calgary Alberta traversing the Aldersyde Subdivision with a crew change at Lethbridge before heading west through the Crowsnest Pass. The occasion of course was that out of 6 units in the consist, not a single GE was present. With that, everything else planned for the day went to the back-burner and the chase was on, even though a cloudy sky dominated for most of the morning. The subdivision cuts SE across prairie landscapes, whereas the road network is typically east-west and north-south so chasing was an adventure. Thankfully, no throngs of railfans out for this one, unlike UP 4014! Anyone who thinks the prairies are flat and barren are sadly mistaken.

The 5 SD set has been powering the Herzog ballast train in Alberta for the last week or so. The consist made a trip up to Scotford (Norht east of Edmonton) before heading south once again. A great catch in 2019 for sure!
