Wow! That sure isn’t the same car I rode on in the early 70s with my mom to Santa Barbara!

The first photo appears to be one of the ex-UP coaches and not the interior of the "Selkirk".

Are those the original trucks ?

Boy, they sure got the new sides nice and really flat.  That is hard to do because of the natural warpage caused by the heat from welding.

Nice touch with the "CP 3605" number as a tip of the hat to the orignal SP number.

That car is now officially added to the list of cars that have been started as complete basket cases and "brought back from the dead" so to speak.  The ex-NYC Hickory Creek woud be another example.

Those are most likely the original trucks.  Can't tell from the pictures if they still have C frames or not.

I know....there is no accounting for taste....but I prefer the original incarnation....by a great margin.  The interior looks like it was designed by Darth Vador himself.

That being said, it is a spectacular job, and saved a worthy candidate from the scrap heap.  Thank you, CP.....but, really, going to the dark side???

Nope. They originally had 41-CDO-11 trucks.

the car is steel sided now,   was that how it was?

It was steel sided before too. But I think Sacramento used thinner steel then CP did. And welding techniques have improved a lot over the last 60 years too.

So are you saying it was re-trucked with "41-CUDO-11" trucks off of an ex-UP car?  If so, did they retain the 14 3/8" pedestal openings with rubber cushion pedestal liners?  If not, then they are effectively "41-CDO-11" trucks.

By the way, nobody except model railroaders ever uses those Pullman Co truck designations.

As far as I know, these cars were built like a typical Pullman-Standard post-war fluted car (pre-1954) where the fluting was applied over vertical batten strips that were welded to the flat steel side sheets.  When the fluting was removed from the cars by SP circa early 1960's, the fluting was simply replaced with very thin stainless sheets that were riveted to the vertical batten strips.  The 3601 and 3606 were rebuilt differently with much thicker stainless sheets that included the pier panels.

I used the name I figured most of us would be familiar with, but SP called them 4-TD-2 trucks.

I wonder if there might be a photo of Selkirk's downstairs lounge......( known to me as the tallest room in railroading )?
