(5-6) Here is something I never thought I would see - hanging kerosene marker lamps on a train - for real not some tourist train.
The markers were used from Vancouver, then a deadhead coach was added at Jasper so they were moved.
Kerosene markers hadn't been used in the states for decades so seeing this (along with the many kerosene switch lamps in yards) was amazing to me - like the 50's !

(7-9) Baggage was loaded on to ex-CN 9488 - a baggage dorm with an interesting history.
It was built by P-S in 1948 as a 22 roomette car for the NYC (Pigeon Bay).

(10-11) Plenty of steam at Jasper.

(12) This is the Athabasca (Milwaukee Road 53).
One of ten cars built by P-S in 1952 for the Milwaukee Road.
CN acquired 6 of them in 1964.

(13) Ex-CN diner 1375 is on the left.
1375 was built as a coach by CCF in 1947. It was rebuilt to a diner in 1965.

Image 11, behind the Via sign, shows the shuttle bus to the ski area or Jasper Park Lodge, with a Brewster Grey Line tour coach behind.

Brewsters "Royal Glacier Tour" would take in the Columbia Icefield and other scenic locations and deliver you to Banff and/or Lake Louise.

The bus station is now at the east end of the station, Brewster and other tour operators still offer this service.

Great series. Some really nice photos. I always get a little kick out of the CN marker lamps. I always wondered why they lasted so long. The CN crew hung them on the rear Montrealler coach when they got on at St Albans to complete the journey to Montreal during one of my mid-1970's trips.
 

Great coverage. Your photos help capture the human interest side of railroading as well as just photos of the train like I am guilty of doing. Thanks for sharing these.

Super outstanding series!  All well composed.  The series gives the view a real sense of your sighting of the Super Continental at Jasper in Dec 1980.

Excellent coverage of the VIA Super Connie, and an excellent view of the operational side of the train! One interesting detail is the inclusion of the Cafe Lounge and Superdome cars together out of Vancouver. In the fall of 1980, these cars were usually switched out for one another in Edmonton, in a bid to reduce wear and tear on the domes.

The deadhead added to the rear is par the course for traditional CN practice.

FYI, a Super Connie is an aircraft nickname, not the nickname of a CN/VIA Rail train.
