Canadian Railroads > Random Images from CN Lines in Northern Alberta

As part of my recent trip to railfan CN's Peace River Sub, I also shot action on other lines in the area. Here's a few of the "random" images

#1 The kick off shot of my trip was lensing Southbound A418 on the Westlock Sub. The freight is seen here passing the derelict pole line near Mearns Alberta on July 8 2019

#2 L505 crosses the Athabasca River at Smith AB, on the Slave Lake Sub. The train is returning from switching the Mistue industrial park, west of Smith. I almost missed this local as I was about to leave Smith to intercept A419. Thanks to my radio scanner, I heard the L505 get a clearance into Smith before I ventured too far away.

#3 A couple hours after shooting the L505 I finally caught up to the A419 as the train nears Mclennen AB.

#4 L504's crew works the yard at Mclennan on July 8 2019

#5 Back on the Peace River Sub, the L506 rolls into Grimshaw Alberta with a pair of GP40-2W's for power. The crew will switch out gondolas to be loaded with scrap metal before returning to Roma Junction. July 9 2019

#6 Southbound L532 passes through farm country at Mile 17 of the Manning Sub on July 14 2019. The Manning and connecting Meander River Subs are restricted to 4 axle power, which on CN translates to lash up's of well worn GP40-2W's.

Nice coverage, Trevor! It's so nice to see non-ES/ET GE consists. The Athabasca River looks like about the nastiest water you can imagine - I'm guessing lots of silt from run-off from our daily rains.

Thanks for the tour. That last photo with the two GP40W's is pretty impressive, never seen anything that bad and I'm an SP fan.

There must be a lot more business out of Mitsue now to warrant 2 SD40-2's.

When I first went up north in 2007 L505 always was assigned a single GP40-2L. By 2010 it was a single SD40-2.

I'm not sure what's all coming out of Mitsue, the short time I spent there the pulp mill was in full operation, along with a couple of smaller places shipping out lumber loads. There was one other place that had covered hoppers, but I'm not sure what the commodity was. The engineer was based ot of Mclennan, since I saw him on a 527 a few days later, and was pretty hard to miss since he was wearing ear muff hearing protection.

Is this tackage former Canadian Northern or Grand Trunk Pacific?

Northern Alberta Railway, 50/50 ownership split between CN and CP.  In 1981, CN bought CP's share and assumed 100% ownership.

Excellent photos, really neat to see that area.
