CP 4069 in 1969, 1984,1985 and 2001
Author: eminence_grise

Today, the West Coast Railway Association owns ex-CP 4069, and operate in a faithful reproduction of its original paint scheme. It served as a replacement locomotive on BC Rails Royal Hudson excursion in 2001.

At various times in its history, this locomotive was CP 1425 and Via 1425.(Canadian Trackside Guide)

In February 1969, 4069 was one of a fleet of F units used on the Montreal-Vaudreuil commuter trains. It is shown eastbound at Dorval QC with a consist of mostly heavweight coaches.

Via acquired the unit as CP 1425, and then ran it as Via 1425 for awhile, before performing an overhaul which included moving the bell to the typical CN F-unit position on the roof, and renumbering it as 6569. It is shown leading Via 2 at Ross Peak BC in July 1984. The location is significant, the cars are shown crossing a bridge over the Illecillewaet River. When double tracking took place a few years later, two crossings of the river and some curvature was eliminated

Via 6569 is shown at Revelstoke BC in March of 1985, leading the eastbound "Canadian". The CP red is showing through the Via paint. Via retained CP F-units on the route because they were equipped with dynamic brakes where former CN F units were not.

Phil, noting your mention of DB's on the CP route, I see from your pic that the trailing B-unit is CN.  Does that mean that only two of the three will work in DB or is it only the A-units that had DB?

Nice photos and story line, Phil. What I love about your first photo is that, even if it were not a script F on CP, it would still be a great photo. Super composition/framing.
