Doug's posting of a SW8 seemed quite straight forward. Then after studying the photo, questions kept popping up in my head. Where did the locomotive come from and secondly why? What was the locomotive peeking out behind 102? One photo, so many questions!
Because of the light blue colour my guess it must be 1001, a 600 HP diesel-hydraulic engine built by GMD (Same Allison torque-converters that the RDCs used. Two 6 cyl.110 - 52 tons - A1597) and retired by GMD in 1977. When I saw the GMDH1 in 1975, it was still in its yellow plant-switcher paint. In 1978, a year after the unit was retired, one Mr. Al Howlett restored the unit back to its GMD demonstrator colours. The unit now is in Ottawa, at the Canada Science & Technology Museum. 1001 was replaced by a switcher acquired from EMD"s La Grange, IL plant This SW1500 No.113 was built by EMD in April of 1971. 113 did not perform well on GMD London plant's tight curves, this resulted in GMD to look for a replacement switcher. At the same time the Essex Terminal Railway (Windsor ON) were looking for a replacement for their SW8 102. GMD kept the well looked after SW8 for themselves, made few alterations, added new paint and the ETR took home the SW1500. Renumbered 107, the SW1500 is still on the ETR's roster.
