The CGR (Canadian Government Railway) was a Canadian Government corporation set up to operate the former Intercolonial Railway and it subsidiaries, the National Transcontinental Railway and the Canadian Northern after these railways failed during WW1. Later, with the failure of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada, these railways became the CNR. There was a pressing need for locomotives, because the Intercolonial and the NTR were handling heavy wartime traffic to Halifax, and the Intercolonial engine fleet was aging and inadequate. At least a couple of CGR Pacifics are preserved. |
