NS is selling its Executive F unit fleet. Should CP buy them ?
Author: Marcus

As reported on the Eastern Board,
Norfolk Southern is auctioning off its Executive F unit fleet.
Four units, A-B-B-A,
rebuilt to GP38-2 standards, complete with PTC.

It's not that uncommon that one of CP's F's goes down,
requiring a freight unit to help out,
so why not add to the roster ?

Bids close on November 20.

Perhaps, better idea,
CN should buy them.

CN is being left in the Heritage dust.
Their business cars now look great in traditional CN paint.
Just need matching power on the front.

Not too late, it's CN100 !

They are quality, historic looking power. Either CP or CN would be excellent choices for buying them. Let's hope somebody with deep pockets can grab them and keep the group intact.

Am I the only one who hears well-placed rumors that a Jacksonville-based outfit is looking very closely at them?

Id rather see BNSF get them but I'm sure that's a damn pipe dream since they don't care about heritage!

They had a set of "Excutive F's" before, why would they buy them again?

Mmmmm, Didn't UP sell all but one of their E until fleet only to buy a few back and then upgrade them? They are still very operable, although used sparingly possibly due to the fact the wheels for E units are hard to find. At least that I what I read somewhere a few years back.

Personally doubt CSX will buy them.  However, the two F7A units were built for the B&O as their #937 & #947; B&O was a CSX predecessor.
The F7B units were built for CGW as #113D & #114B so they would not have any historical ties to CSX.
We'll just have to wait until the high bidder is announced.

The Ontario Southland should buy them. They already have two in service and one other !

I know they have been looking for a B unit for awhile.

The fact that CP purchased the ex-SP dome car would indicate someone at CP keeps an eye on heritage equipment up for sale. The amount and cost of repair to that car would indicate that someone would have had some convincing to do for CP to acquire that car for their executive fleet.

A friend who retired as a rules instructor for CP had a great knowledge of ex-CP passenger equipment preserved or awaiting disposition and I know there were other people in the organization who kept track of motive power the same way.

While we are all getting older and our railway careers further in the past, I think some still have contacts at head office. My guess is CP knows of these units up for sale.

Remember the E units that CN used to use on the business train? Today CN prefers to use freight units to pull any of their busness car fleet, rahter then maintain a dedicated set of motive power that only serves one purpose.

No.  CP just created two pools of SD's that would be better than the F's from a publicity / customer / maintenance [ hopefully ! ] / utilization standpoint.  Besides, F's are soooo yesterday...

Speaking of the new SD's, has there been any speculation as to why CP is doing this, especially now ?
