Canadian Railroads > MLW lightweight RS23, 1976

This unit was a member of a sub-class of MLW RS23's built with hightweight frames for traveling of 60 pound rail on branchlines in Saskatchewan.

Very late in switcher production, both Alco and MLW moved the radiator intakes from the sides of the hood to the front.

This unit became a parts donor for other MLW's at the Greater Winnipeg Water District and the gutted hulk was recently scrapped.

I don't know if this is the same unit but this one also looks like a parts donor.  At GWWD facility in Winnipeg 7/15/18.

That would be an S-13, judging by the trucks (switcher, rather than road trucks).  The TSG says it is the former BC Rail 201.

I would guess that the S-13 and RS-23 were fairly similar above the frame.  The RS units were capable of higher speeds, and had transition, which I doubt was a feature of the switchers.

One of the neat things is that when CP repainted these out of the Script scheme, they left on the metal strips that carried the yellow stripe across the filters, plus whatever sheet metal was needed for the Script lettering. The proportions and cab roof profile were magic on these and related units.
