Canadian Railroads > MLW lightweight RS23, 1976Date: 01/06/20 08:01 MLW lightweight RS23, 1976 Author: eminence_grise This unit was a member of a sub-class of MLW RS23's built with hightweight frames for traveling of 60 pound rail on branchlines in Saskatchewan.
Very late in switcher production, both Alco and MLW moved the radiator intakes from the sides of the hood to the front. This unit became a parts donor for other MLW's at the Greater Winnipeg Water District and the gutted hulk was recently scrapped. That would be an S-13, judging by the trucks (switcher, rather than road trucks). The TSG says it is the former BC Rail 201. I would guess that the S-13 and RS-23 were fairly similar above the frame. The RS units were capable of higher speeds, and had transition, which I doubt was a feature of the switchers. The proportions and cab roof profile were magic on these and related units.
