For our weekly look back at winter railroading in Alberta we are at Gleichen in March 1974, with GP9 8636 throttling up on its Extra West grain and one stock car consist. Elevators, station, order boards and telegraph lines now all gone. Richard Yaremko

Winter can be long in Alberta, I have seen it snow as late as May 31st and as early as September 28th.  Here is Gleichen, AB on a Miserable Monday September 30, 2019.  As already noted the elevators, pole line and station are gone but the sidings were kept.  I friend and I were on our way to Wainwright when we stumbled upon CPR 8937, a GE ES44AC built by GE in October 2011.

Spent at least a weekend but maybe two in Gleichen while in Sperry. You could go do laundry at the nice laundromat on the First Nations side (South side) of the tracks or catch a Greyhound Canada into Calgary early in the morning, spend the day then come back later that same night. I did both! I also seen it more in snow than not.
