Canadian Railroads > VIA Canadian at Sudbury,Ont - Dec 82Date: 01/07/20 07:35 VIA Canadian at Sudbury,Ont - Dec 82 Author: gcm The westbound Canadian at Sudbury,Ontario with ex-CP Riding Mountain Park.
The car was built in 1954 by Budd. A dome observation bar lounge with 3 bedrooms and a drawing room. The map of Riding Mountain Park mural above the writing desk has been removed. But the multiple clocks and serving area for tea and coffee haven't yet appeared. They came with the HEP program in the early 1990's.

Gradually the no-smoking areas increased. It started with the domes, then the dining cars except for last sitting. There was one no-smoking sleeping car. Then the only smoking area in the sleeper class was the Mural Lounge under the dome. Then that was restricted to certain hours only. It was amusing to see the crew taking over the Mural Lounge while paying passengers waited their turn to get in. I don't have the time-line for these changes. Eventually federal law prohibited smoking on all trains. The large stands in the lounge were kept as drink holders. The ashtrays were plated over. Just a few years ago they disappeared for safety reasons. They could become projectiles in a derailment. I remember moving one and it was heavy!!

On December 22, carelessly discarded smoking materials caught a garbage bin on fire as the Ocean was being backed to Windsor Jct. to be turned for the next day's departure. Somebody at Rockingham noticed the flames, the train was stopped there, and the fire department called. Unfortunately, 8514 never saw reveue service again. It was stored at Montreal for several years, and supplied parts to repair another Skyline involved in the 2001 Stewiacke wreck, but the lingering smell of smoke meant it couldn't be economically repaired. It's shown here at the former Halifax VIA maintenance centre the next day, just before being covered with a tarp and being carted off to Montreal. To gcm and CN6218, thanks for posting your images. However, sad to see the 8514 burned out! Date: 01/07/20 19:56 Re: VIA Canadian at Sudbury,Ont - Dec 82 Author: krm152 Excellent photo series.
The exterior photos both illustrate the car and provide a scene. The interior photos provide views seldom seen. Thanks for the series posting. ALLEN Date: 01/07/20 20:03 Re: VIA Canadian at Sudbury,Ont - Dec 82 Author: EL833 Love these Gary, but those first two- wow !
Roger Durfee Akron, OH Date: 01/07/20 20:18 Re: VIA Canadian at Sudbury,Ont - Dec 82 Author: jp1822 Is there any general history of the Halifax Maintenance facility that anyone can offer - in the VIA years. First did VIA inherit this from CN? Presumably this facility handled maintenance for all Maritime based trains - particularly the RDC's that roamed throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.....After the 1990 cuts (aka massacre of passenger rail in the Maritimes), I presume this maintenance facility was left to just serve the Atlantic and Ocean. But as the train sets were HEP'ed and Atlantic cancelled, I presume VIA felt they no longer needed a maintenance base there for just the Ocean. I mean we also saw the whole Halifax station complex morph from a nice covered multi track platform to an open air stub end terminal station.

Sorry, I missed this when you first asked the question. The building behind the burned out Skyline was built new for VIA in the mid '80s. It was built specifically to maintain the RDCs, so it was underutilized after January, 1990. I'm not sure, but I think the Ocean and Atlantic were maintained primarily in Montreal, although VIA did keep a spare F40 at the centre until the mid '90s or so. The building is still there today. The rails are still inside, but the pits have been filled in. It is now owned by the Halifax Port Authority, and was used for a while by defunct DRL bus lines as a maintenance centre and later by motion picture support company William F. White. There's now a microbrewery in part of it, but I'm not sure about the rest. GTD |
