CN: QC Port key to taking container business from NY/NJ Ports
Author: JPB

From Montreal Gazette of January 13, 2020:

"Canada’s biggest railroad sees a future $775-million container terminal in Quebec City as a key cog in a plan to steal market share from the Port of New York and New Jersey — even as local opposition to the project grows."

Good luck with that.  The St Lawrence River freezes in many seasons, requiring specialized ice breaking ships, two river pilots on some ships, and limits on night time sailing.

In that context, the Canadian Pacific's interest in the port of Searsport, Maine, makes a lot of sense

The Port of Montreal has a tradition of awarding a gold-handled cane to the captain of the first ship to arrive in the port in the New Year. In recent years, this has always been either on New Year's Day itself or very shortly thereafter.

I used Montreal for years with great success.

More of a problem is getting a line or lines to call on any additional ports. No container lines make direct calls on Boston anymore. Good luck if you are Quebec City, St. John, Searsport, etc.

The lines are looking for big facilities and near population centers. Halifax is an exception but CN's pipeline into Canada makes up for it.

There is no such place as St John, NB ...... it is Saint John .... spelled out.

What would you say if a Canadian wrote .... Saint Lewis, Missouri ???

Guilty as charged.

Either way, it isn't going to be on any container lines port call map anytime soon.

Will the QGRY be able to have access to the new port in Quebec City in addition to CN?
