In June of 1997, S-13u 8703 was near the end of its career on CN.  It was built as S-13 8610 in 1959, renumbered to 103, then back to 8610, before being rebuilt at the Moncton shops in 1984 and getting the 8700-series number.  Pairs of these were typical yard power in the Halifax area through the '90s, and would sometimes venture out to Windsor Jct. or do transfers to Dartmouth, although use on the main line was somewhat limited by a top speed of 45 mph.  Most of the remaining S-13us went to Canac at the end of 1997 and 8703 was scrapped in 2002.

By 1997 most of the Fairview roundhouse itself had been demolished, although the turntable was still operative.  The building to the right of 8703 was the machine shop and power plant.  It, and a similar vintage office building burned last fall in a fire that lasted well over 24 hours.  And the building in the left background was the local phone company's work centre, where vehicles were maintained and phones reconditioned. the land was redeveloped in the 2000s into a Loblaws Superstore, so not much remains from this picture except the rusted rails of the "boulevard" and the oil soaked earth.
