Canadian Railroads > New Brunswick Thirty-Eight Thursday

For about a year, in 2003 and 2004, New Brunswick Southern and Montreal, Maine & Atlantic ran a joint venture intermodal train between Saint John, NB and Montreal, running through Maine on the old Canadian Pacific route.  MMA used some former-Amtrak F40s as motive power, while NBSR used some recently acquired (from Devco in Cape Breton) GP38-2s.  NBSR even painted two of the three Geeps in a bright yellow Sunbury Express scheme, named after one of Irving's trucking subsidiaries.  On March 19, 2004 GP38-2s 2318 and 2319 (the former Devco 216 and 219) were splitting the out of service ABS signals at Acamac, just west of Saint John, at 09:24 as they headed for Maine.  2318 still wears the Devco paint it was delivered in, and both units sport features particular to the coal hauling shortline: small fuel tanks, no dynamic brakes, and odd little metal "class flags" at the end of the long hood.  This was regular manifest freight No. 907, but the same power was used for intermodal trains 777 and 778.

In the second picture, after a crew change at McAdam, 907 is crossing the St. Croix River, and international border, entering Vanceboro, ME.

The first photo is really neat, the second is stunning, and the small fuel tanks sure help out, to show some sky under the frames.
