GMD-1 Goodness
Author: DundasMP23

I rediscovered this video on my iPhone while downloading work-related photos yesterday.  This is from March 21; CN 514 switching in Thamesville, ON with CN GMD-1us 1439 and 1444.  The sun angle wasn't any good for a photo so I decided to take a short video.  The audio makes the video!  Enjoy.

Another vote for CN being the class one king of first generation road switchers. Those are old enought to look modern! Thanks for sharing.

That 1444 gets around. - was the trailing unit in the picture I posted from the footbridge a few days ago.  Thanks Rob, love the GMD-1's.

Why didn't the Canucks just orders over some GP38'S?

Because GMD-1's were built before EMD/GMDD were building GP38's, that why.

The GMD-1's were originally built on three axle trucks for the light rail on the branches in Canada and were a Canada-only model.

When rebuilt into the 1400-series they were extensively upgraded and received the four-axle Flexicoil trucks,12-645 prime movers and a long list of other upgrades. Retaining the D15C main generator derated them to 1350 hp but they are essentially a SW-1500 on a lengthened frame to accommodate the short hood.

They also had 1900-series units delivered with Flexicoid Bs, and at least some if not all of those had steam generators in them, I think.
