Such figures generally vary by subdivision.....

If it helps, CN runs 210-car grain unit trains to the coast. CP, in contrast, runs 135-car grain unit trains.

CN's more gentle grades make this possible, although I'm sure that the loading and unloading capabilities at origin and destination come into play here, too.

CP is trying to standardize it's grain trains on a 147 car, 8500', 15,000 tonnes HEP (High Efficiency Product) operation.  Although they have run some bigger car counts.

CP runs potash trains up to around 200 cars with 2x2x1 power, that should be around 29600 ton, and 0.7 hpt. Not exactly fast up the hills.

i was wondering IF 30,000 ton trains were being run up in canada, especially over grades like kicking horse and rogers passes.........

Keep in mind CP is a 1% railroad westbound. The potash cars are new enough that they apparently have good brakes, grain trains seem more likely to have issues on the descending westbound grades (which exceed 2% on both passes)
