Tunnel Tuesday
Author: hoggerdoug

This is a twelve image post, plus a video clip. Please be patient.
July 2008 images from the lead unit on the Rocky Mountaineer as we negotiate the curves and two short tunnels. Mile 186.5 is between the two tunnels. This section of track on the BC Rail Lillooet sub is known as the Kelly Lake Hill with a continuous descending grade of 31 miles and a drop of 2767 feet over the 31 miles, much of it is two point two percent grade. The Hill starts at mile 191 a mile or so south of Kelly Lake and bottoms out at mile 160.4 the Fraser River bridge.   3609 feet above sea level at the top of the grade and 842 feet above sea level at the Fraser River bridge. Downtown Lillooet is about 791 feet above sea level.

through one tunnel and into the next. One of the "on board staff" in the second unit, enjoying the scenery or most likley having a smoke break.

Thanks very much for posting these photos and video.  Having concluded that this might be the most spectacular train trip in North America, I flew to Prince George about half a dozen times to ride the RDCs and also rode Rocky Mountaineer to see this canyon, the two big lakes, and other highlights.  Brings back wonderful memories, as well as concerns that this experience may never be possible again.

Familiar angles but not scenery. That first curve into the tunnel looks like 22" radius!

Tight curve exaggerated by touch of telephoto lens.  Doug

Flanger sign, means raise flanger blade. There's an obstruction of some sort. (i.e. the guard rails on the bridge.)
