The 'Wreckhouse'
Author: ghCBNS

Here's a poster I have of the Newfoundland Railway's Overland Limited in The 'Wreckhouse' area along the west coast of the island. This area is noted for the extreme winds down out of Long Range Mountains and have been known to blow trains off the tracks. A local resident...... Lauchie MacDougall was employed by the railway to advise the dispatcher when winds were high and the trains would be stopped.

On my recent trip to Newfoundland I hiked the old roller-coaster like railbed depicted in the painting. It's now a hiking/biking/ATV trail and part of the T'Railway Provincial Park that's preserved nearly the entire old railway right-of-way across the island.

The railway was abandoned in 1988 but even today.....signs along the Trans Canada Highway warn truckers of the high winds through the Wreckhouse area.
