More "Extra" Trains in Halifax
Author: cn6218

Although the pace has slowed, CN is still running extra trains into and out of Halifax to deal with the surge in container business here.  The extras have had various names.  "X120" vs. "Q120", or 407/408 (which is normally a Dartmouth train).  There was even a 123 the other afternoon, a number we haven't seen used in years.

On August 19, 408 arrived at Rockingham with a long train of containers.  It's shown here at 12:30 on the Transfer Track next to Bedford Basin, with the train snaking along the shoreline in the second frame.

About 20 minutes later, it was followed by the regular 120, although they had to wait for over an hour at Millview (the start of the Transfer Track) until the yardmaster figured out what to do with 408's cars.  The yardmaster jobs were abolished in Halifax over the summer, and it's now coordinated remotely from Moncton.  Needless to say, that hasn't contributed to the overall fluidity of the situation.  At 13:57, Q120 was finally starting down the Transfer Track at Millview towards Rockingham in the 3rd frame.

There should be an extra 120 arriving this morning too.
