Just another day in St Johnsbury
Author: briancdn

It's August 1977 and RS-2 8404 has just arrived at St Johnsbury,VT with a short train, probably from Wells River. The crew decides to turn the engine for the run to Newport so she'll be pointed long hood forward. Meanwhile RS-2 8401 is burbling away in the yard, seems to be replacing S-2 7098 for this week.

Just another day on CPR's Vermont lines where the RS-2's are doing what they were purchased for almost 30 years before. They would last until 1983 when they were retired at Newport, along with the S-2's.

8404 is cut off and heads for the turntable. Perfect size for a model RR. This table turned D10 4-6-0's back in the day.

8404 rumbles off the turntable and will soon be headed for Newport. Just another day in St Johnsbury.

Nice photo essay and commentary.
There's a few model railroads based on this time and place that have been surfacing lately, amazing work, far far away, a long time ago.

A great look back on what was once a normal every day routine. I notice that it appears the RS-2s are not equipped with MU connections.

Correct. No MU connections. In the early days of dieselizing some roads didn't think it was needed.

Brilliant series; the background building and wrong-side lighting in the first photo are superb.

I grew up 30 miles from here and remember scenes like this fondly.  The MEC would come in with 5 unit consists on the Mountain Division, some times with one of their RS-11's.  Late on the LVRC would have RS-3's.  Alco country for sure.
