The Chaleur in 2010
Author: cn6218

Back in the winter of 2010 the Chaleur was still running, and usually went all the way to Gaspé town, without having to short turn.  Although many of the bridges on the line had slow orders then, most of the track was good for 50 mph.  Only if the train was late into Matapédia and unable to get to the end of the line and back before the westbound Ocean that night, would the train be turned on the wye at New Carlisle.

On March 15, 2010 train 16 is nearing a highway overpass at Caplan, and then running along the sandstone cliffs next to the Bay of Chaleur.

About two hours farther east, after the station stop at Chandler, the same train is crossing the beach at Pabos.  Next stop will be Grand Rivière.

I rode the train twice before it quit.
I don't remember the dates,but
had to be in the late period.

Drove up from Florida.Left my car
at St,Hyansent (sp?)for the round
trip. Both times we went all the way.

Perfect train,bagg,coach,diner/lounge/dome
and two sleepers.I had a great trip.to
bad we can't do it again.

Thanks for those Geoff. I'm quite optimistic the Chaleur will be back!

And a lot of those bridges have now been rebuilt or completely replaced. Check out this site for current photos of the reconstruction of the line:

I consider myself very fortunate that I got a ride on the Chaleur on a beautiful sunny day all the way to Gaspe.  Turned around and rode back to Montreal.  Beautiful scenery along the water.  Wonderful salmon dinner cooked to order in the Skyline kitchen! Same consist as the pictures!!  Hope VIA brings it back!!

Same here.....last time I was on the train it had an extra coach for a school group tour trip of some sort, and then there was an extra Chateau sleeper, as VIA was hoping to ramp up summer traffic and even had an attendant in training. She had a really tough time staying awake even second day out from Montreal on way to Gaspe, let alone the turn-around at Gaspe!
