Canadians in Scranton, PA

The Delaware Lackawanna, based in Scranton, PA has quite a collection of Alco and MLW power, and here are a couple examples I photographed on a visit there on August 16 and 17, 2002.

Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern C-425 has a rather interesting history, stretching from one coast to the other, and in two countries. (MA&N is part of Genesee Valley Transportation, as is the D-L.)  It was still wearing it's 2-tone green paint in 2002, and with the patched over cornering lights, it would be obvious that it had belonged to BC Rail at one time.  But any hard core Alco fan could tell you that the C-425 never sold (new) in Canada.  This particular model was built at the request of the Erie-Lackawanna in 1964 as a group of 12, 2451-2462.  The main difference between this and the C-424s was an extra 100 HP, and the same main generator as the GE U25B, which E-L already owned.  These locomotives would likely have had a short career like the other Alcos that went to Conrail, but early in 1976, the leasing company was successful in repossessing them from E-L and sold them to BC Rail.  BC Rail ran them through the Squamish shops and rebuilt them for another 14 or 15 years of service, before they were sold in the early '90s to GVT.  One even spent a year and a half submerged in Seton Lake before being retrieved, rebuilt and put back in service.

D-L 3643 was built in 1970 as CP 4743, their last M-636 from MLW.  It worked at CP Rail for 25 years before going to the Pennsylvania shortline.
