Canadian Railroads > Distributed Braking Cars

I was at Snider this morning, just east of Mac Yard in Toronto, when a westbound intermodal came by with a string of ten Distributed Braking Cars - actually one container and nine cars.  Here's a few shots...

Getting ready for winter?

The car the container is riding on looks like the ones they used use for MoW crews that would be working in remote locations.  I think the last time I saw one was when CN pulled out of Cape Breton (1993) and they hauled them off the Island as part of the daily train from Sydney.

To me it looks like a coil steel car that has been repurposed. Pretty heavy duty frame there. Much heavier then you would need for bunk trailer.

How are they controlled?  Electronically like DP's, or by train line brake pipe pressure?

That's a spectacular catch, and passing you at a slow rate of speed (relax, I know speed is a rate, there's no such thing as a rate of speed. I'm just mocking the cop-speak that thinks they sound more sophisticated when they use it in press releases) to make the shooting so easy.

By the car numbers i would say the container on flat preceeded the boxcar versions. Likely a diesel generator that operates the air compressor that assists in keeping the train airline charged.  They have been discussed on TO before.
