Canadian Railroads > East of Shubenacadie, NS

The town of Shubenacadie in Nova Scotia is named after the river which divides it in two.  It's in the center of Nova Scotia's dairy farm district, and also the point where the major highways between Halifax and Truro crossed the river, and also the Intercolonial Rwy's crossing.  I've featured that crossing many times, but there is also the Rt. 224 highway overpass south (railway east) of town that provides an elevated view in both directions.  That's where I was on November 17 to catch former CREX  leader 3957 on the front of Montreal to Halifax train Z12021.  There would be another Z120, this time from Toronto, later in the afternoon.  The train is coming to the end of a section of "fast" running (60 mph for this Z-train)  before entering the curves at mile 39 approaching Milford, NS.

In the second photo, ES44ACs 3957 and 2830 have just knocked down the approach signal to Milford as they lean into the curve.  Just out of sight on the left is the Shubenacadie River.  During periods of high rainfall or spring melt, there can be water on both sides of the track here

Great views, nice searchlighs, but the pole line has definitely seen better days!  The unchecked growth of brush indicates that it's abandoned, but there is still wire hanging, so maybe not?

It's a bit hard to know what's going on with that pole line.  There are places along the Bedford Sub where it has been removed, and other spots where trees have fallen on it and broken crossarms, and it hasn't been repaired.  Then there's a spot near Brookfield where a vehicle took out a pole (broke the pole off at the bottom, and the wires suspended what was left).  The signal maintainers were out the next day to fix that.  The line carries power (or at least it used to) on the outside pair of the bottom arm, and that may still be required for intermediate signals, but the code line may be buried.  That might explain why some get attention and others don't.

Most if not all code is through the rails, so it may be hard to find places with code over wire still in use.

Beautiful!  I remember that area well from my last Ocean trip in 2019.  Was very scenic in the low January afternoon sun.
