The Canadian and the Ocean running late
Author: DrawingroomA

It has been fairly quiet on this board lately, so I offer this just as a matter of interest. With the reduction in frequency, this is one of the few times that VIA has four long-distance trains running simultaneously.

Number 1 was a little over one hour late at Winnipeg on Monday. By Edmonton it was almost 12 hours late and about 5 hours late at Kamloops North. There is no ETA.on tsimobile for Vancouver, but #1 usually makes up a lot of time between Abbotsford and Vancouver.

Number 2 was almost 3 hours late at Jasper,  5 hours late at Saskatoon, 6 hours late at Winnipeg and 7 hours late approaching Malachi.

Number 15 departed Halifax on time yesterday but suffered a major delay west of Truro. It was 7 1/2 hours late at Moncton and is presently 8 1/2 hours late approaching Mont-Joli. The ETA for Montreal is 18:34. VIA rarely holds trains for Toronto for a late Ocean, except for the last train of the day.

Number 14 is the only one of the four long-distance trains running well. It was on time until Matapedia, but about an hour late at Campbellton.

Thanks DrawingroomA!   I noted the #1 was at WPG over six hours until 02:30.  Wonder what that was about.

At 07:15 Pacific Time, ETA for Vancouver was 10:35 (OT would be 08:00). At that point, the train was 6 hr 32 min late, not yet midway between Boston Bar and Hope.

After being only about 15 minutes late at Truro,
#15 sat at Folly Lake for almost 7 hours, apparently with engine problems. It was so late
it had to meet overnight train L508 at Amherst, and back into Amherst station, further delaying it.
It was almost caught by CN intermodal 121, which left Halifax around 21:00.

Shows how much padding there is to go from 12 to 5 hours down. At least they are running which is more than can be said for many Amtrak services. And not nearly as late as some either.

Much of the padding is in the major station stops.

The timetable allows 3 hr, 11 min at Edmonton. This No. 1 used only 50 minutes.

At Jasper, exactly 3 hours are allowed. This train used 1 hr, 12 min.

Arrival at Vancouver was a 14:24, so 6 hr, 24 min late. On its journey through the Fraser Valley, it had gotten as late as 8 hr, 2 min at Abbotsford, after leaving Boston Bar 6 hr, 10 min late.

Number 2 was six hours late at Sioux Lookout yesterday evening and was a half hour early at Parry Sound this morning.

There is much padding en route as well as at stations. The Canadian arrived in Toronto  2 1/2 hours early.
