Under the shed at Halifax
Author: gcm

Dec 80
A very cold morning under the trainsheds.
I had arrived late the night before on a very late Ocean.
So late that VIA moved passengers that had reservations at the CN Hotel (including me) into another sleeper which (to the left) was cut off and left in the station till the morning.
CN 1771 is there to move the car later.
I believe that is a rebuilt RS-18 (to a RSC-14).

I don't remember there being a shed at Halifax. When was it torn down?  I recall when the Canadian used to arrive to Toronto late afternoon (before the 4 night out schedule) we were allowed to occupy our rooms until around 7A if the train arrived after midnight. Has Amtrak ever done the same when their Chicago trains arrive late? That would still give them until early afternoon to clean and turn.

Within a few years of the picture being taken.  I'm pretty sure that in 1980, VIA was still turning trains one car at a time on the station turntable, so leaving one sleeper in the station to be turned later was less of an operational burden than one might think.
