It is August 1986 in Toronto where I am in a TTC PCC streetcar about to meet and pass TTC 4066.

I recall reading that Toronto streetcar lines are/were 4 feet 10 7/8 inches gauge (which is about 1,478 mm). Any history on that?

Yes, this was because today's TTC was made up of a number of smaller companies, some private, some public.  The private companies wanted to maximize earning to they so they would also offer freight service on their lines.  The City of Toronto did not want freight cars on their streets so they used a difference gauge to stop the practice.
