Canadian Railroads > Train Derailment Upsets Westjet

Does anyone have any details?  Apparently the derailment  took out Westjet's fibre optics links.
The train derailment in question took place in Bassano, Alta., approximately 140 kilometres southeast of Calgary, on Wednesday afternoon.

Some specifics:

Bassano derailment: 16:26 Mountain Time, July 13. Loaded CP DP grain assignment 301-222-13 (CP 8067, CP 9770, CP 9668, CP 7057, CP 9773, 203L, 0E, 0R, 27962T, 11758F) was proceeding Westward when 43 hopper cars derailed at mile 97.7 Brooks Sub. No injuries.

Kamloops derailment: 16:06 Pacific Time, July 13. Loaded CP DP grain assignment 303-515-12 (CP 9817, CN 3801, 122L, 0E, 0R, 17319T, 6999F) was proceeding Westward when 18 hopper cars derailed at mile 2 Thompson Sub. The derailed cars collided with and derailed 2 box cars on an adjacent track. No injuries.

I'm surprised that WestJet doesn't have redundant communications links. When one pathway is disripted, another is activated.

Westjet does not own the lines, their communications provider does.

Nope, purely on the communications company's shoulders. Their job is to provide the link from point A to point B. The customer could care less how they do it as long as they do do it.

But, they didn't do it.  Causing a problem for the customer.
