Canadian Railroads > Rocky Mountaineer With a Special Guest

Last Monday the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver had an unusual guest locomotive in the consist. The regular RMR locomotive fleet consists of 11 GP40 models of various heritage. The fleet has been fairly reliable the last several seasons but for some reason CN SD70M-2 #8897 was added to the consist in Vancouver on Monday Sept 5. Here’s a selection of shots from the days chase into the Fraser and Thompson River Canyons.

3. Entering Calamity Tunnel near mile 10 on CP’s Cascade Sub.

4. Crossing the CP bridge at Cisco BC

5. In the White Canyon of the Thompson River passing devastated forests from the July 2021 fires.

6. At Drynoch East passing remnants of flooding and mud slides from early August.

Beautiful shots !

Great chase.  I heard on one of the videos I've watched that the train is run at freight train speeds which helps when chasing.

They're all great shots, but for some reason I love the fifth the most. Maybe because it's so different for this area. Is this just past Skihist Provincial Park, where there's a road into a few houses?

There was an issue with one of the RMR units so the CN unit was added for protection. It came off at Kamloops.

RMR fleet is actually 11 locomotives -- 8011-8019 in Canada and 8020-8021 in U.S.

are the the US ones with the train in Glenwood Springs today?  I cannot tell on this cam,  https://coloradowebcam.net/camera/gws-midland-ave-colorado-river-webcam

Just proves that with proper maintenance those locomotives will last almost forever.
Just look at how many GP9's are still with us.

Same thing in the US.  Riding Denver to Moab last year our top speed was 60 MPH.

Great series, and colour on these images.  #5 stands out for me also.  Is that angle newly available due to fires or construction?  I don't recall seeing an image from there before.
