Canadian Railroads > SD40 SundayDate: 10/02/22 09:30 SD40 Sunday Author: cn6218 SD40s were still pretty common on CN and its US subsidiaries 25 years ago, although they would become rebuild fodder before long.
On October 19, 1997 I found Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific SD40 5906 at the Fairview roundhouse, just in after arriving overnight on a train. Later that morning I captured CN 5003 over in Dartmouth, one of the few SD40s on CN that came from GMD with dynamic brakes. It appears to be sandwiched between a couple SD40-2Ws, probably the gypsum power, since October 19th was a Sunday and 701/703 didn't run on weekends back then. Back at Fairview in the afternoon, non-DB 5063 was being assembled into a consist to go out that night. In the background lurks SD75I 5690, ready to take the SD40s' place as premiere power on the railway. For a few years a common power consist for CN's 5000-ft., 5000-ton trains into and out of Halifax was the pairing of an SD75I and SD40 variant, providing enough power to get the train over the road reliably.
