Canadian Railroads > The Rocky Mountaineer, Thompson River, Ashcroft, BC 2000

1. The E/B Rocky Mountaineer, train #104, is on Canadian National's Ashcroft Sub. GP40-3s 805 & 801 are on the point. Canadian Pacific's Thompson Sub is on the left. 3:03PM on 9-7-2000 in Ashcroft, BC.
2. The E/B Rocky Mountaineer, train #104, is crossing the Thompson River on CN's Ashcroft Sub. GP40-3s 805 & 801 are on the point. CP's Thompson Sub is on the left. 3:03PM on 9-7-2000 in Ashcroft, BC.
3. The E/B Rocky Mountaineer, train #104, is on CN's Ashcroft Sub next to the Thompson River. GP40-3s 805 & 801 are on the point. To the right, is what at the time I think was CP's tie plant. Google Maps in 2023 identifies it as a Koppers Chemical plant. 3:03PM on 9-7-2000 in Ashcroft, BC.

I'm not sure of the timing of corporate changes; I think of it as having been the Tolko tie plant, now Koppers. I've shot the WB Rocky from this vantage point, as well as other trains. It's a beauty. Now that it's Ashcroft Terminals, access is sticky. We got visited by an official on one of our days in 2018, but allowed to stay. Apparently things aren't so benign now.

Access for railfans is effectively impossible. The road is gated at Ashcroft Terminals, beyond the upper left corner of photo 2.  Employees of the tie plant have a pass but for anyone else, forget about it.

Thanks for that info; I guess when I get back to the Ashcroft area, I have one less location to budget for time.

I REALLY like Pic 2!!

Rode that train about 10 years ago in gold leaf level service from Vancouver to Kamloops (I think) or maybe Banff I don't remember now but it was a great trip with amazing views.

Very nice!  

I spent some quality time around Ashcroft in 2000.  No scanner, and rarely took photos.  Just enjoyed the trains, and bicycling on the CP side of the river upriver from Spences Bridge.  

Also, watched a Rocky Mountaineer roll by slowly somewhere in the interior of BC when I was hidden in the hole of a Canadian grainer in a siding.  Thinking "That's nice that some people are on the pretty train, with one open air platform, but I'm pretty happy rolling on the CPR today."
