On the QNSL around Labrador City, Feb 2002
Author: 86235

In Feb 2002 I spent a week in Labrador City, taking pictures of th QNS&L and Wabush Lake railways. We flew up from Sept Iles but returned on the train via Ross Bay Junction. Never been anywhere quite so cold!

1: At the 8km grade crossing on the Trans Labrador Highway a pair of light engines lead by 301, an SD40-2, head east towards Ross Bay Junction.
2: Further east at the 22km crossing a Lab City bound train of covered hoppers and empty ore cars behind a pair of GE C44-9W.
3: At the 35 km crossing a loaded train heads east towards Ross Bay behind 407 and 402, respectively a C44-9W and a C40-8M

4: 409 and 403 on loads at km 22. Another C44-9W and C40-8M combination.
5: The other railroad in Lab City was the Wabush Lake, they had running rights to Ross Bay Junction where the QNSL took over to Arnaud Junction, outside Sept Iles, where the C de F Arnaud (Arnaud Railroad) the Wabush Lake's sister company, hauled the iron ore the last few miles to the Pointe Noire ore dock. In 2002 both railroads used MLW RS18s. Wabush Lake empties approaching the km 8 crossing.
6: On Wednesday the QNSL ran a Labrador City to Sept Iles through train, leaving Lab City at 12:00 and arriving in Sept Iles at 20:00.

The day before we were due to leave there was a serious blizzard, causing our return to be delayed by 24 hours

7: Wabush Lake loads ready to leave
8: En-route to Ross Bay Junction
9: March 2nd, our train to Ross Bay at the Lab City station. Just the SD40-2, a single passenger car and an HEP generator. There were five passengers heading to Sept Iles that day. At Ross Bay we transferred to the train from Schefferville, which was well patronised. It had a couple of automat buffet cars and was supposedly dry, no alcohol.

You made my day with this post !  I shot some of this back in October of 2000, but our weather was a bit milder then. Kudos for braving the elements and sharing your adventure. Not a whole lot of shots of the QNSL and even less of the Wabush Lake Rwy on the net. Thanks again !

Great experience, we went snow mobiling, did some skiing as well as the trains.
