Hay River, NWT still rail served?
Author: P

Neat article on the line from Edmonton to Hay River, Northwest Territories in the latest Classic TRAINS magazine.

Of course the article was about a trip in the 1970s, so i became curious as to current rail operations.  From current satellite images, it appears the ore/zinc mine complex in nearby Pine Point has been dismatled and the 54 mile rail spur to there is ripped out.  Even the one large bridge along the line is missing.  When did this occur?
There are a number of tank cars visible in Hay River, but I don't see any ohter type of freight cars - nor locomotives.  I had hoped that such a remote location would see regular rail shipments of other supplies, but none seems apparent.  Does anyone here have any insight into service on this line currently that they could share?

This years Trackside guide still shows trains 2-3 days a week in each direction.

I remember reading an article that the line between Hay River and Enterprise is being torn up due to damage by a wildfire.  A reload has or will be set up in Enterprise.

There's a number of articles in the Cabin Radio webpage, explains different locations and different times, but it's still not running end to end.

+ it sounds like somebody re-built an isolated section of the line making the business decision that the whole line would be rebuilt, but wasn't. The way the story reads north of some property line looks good but south does not. There was mention of a Regional operation but there's too many variables to the story at the moment.

Interesting replies.  I do remember hearing of a recent fire that burned up some bridges, but I don't know the scope of the damage.  Enterprise doesn't seem to far away from Hay River, so suprising that they would continue trains to there but not rebuild all the way into Hay River.
