Ex-Reading Crusader cars on CN/VIA
Author: gcm

Dec 1980
Cars being taken out to the yard in Toronto include 2 of the 5 ex-Reading Crusader cars acquired by CN in 1962.
The cars were built by Budd in 1937.
302 was one of two observation cars (originally used at each end of the train so no turning was involved).
The other car looks like 303 a coach.
The cars were retired a couple years later and I believe two survive today.

Nice shots Gary.  On the Reading the cars were numbered 1 to 5 with 1 and 5 being the observation cars, 2 and 4 were coaches and the middle dining car carried the Crusader name.  Pretty sure #3 did not appear on the car.

Modelling question, was the roof painted black or this was just dirt caught in the grove, seems too perfectly squared to be just dirt and soot.

One of these Crusader Observation cars is preserved at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.  It still has CN marking on the inside.  You can often see it on the Virtual Railfan Strasburg RR cam.
