Canadian Railroads > Refinery RemnantsDate: 10/21/24 07:51 Refinery Remnants Author: cn6218 I mentioned the former Texaco Dartmouth refinery in a recent posting. CN was involved in moving some large components when it was decommissioned, from Eastern Passage at the end of the Dartmouth Sub, to Windsor Jct., and from there to Ocean Terminals on the Bedford Sub. I'm a bit surprised the equipment didn't just leave from the Dartmouth side of the harbour, but perhaps there wasn't any available berthing space at the time. The move took 2 days, January 6 and 7, 1998. These photos are all from the second day.
SW1200RS units 1379 and 1395 were moving slowly along the high clearance north track at Armdale, about mile 4 of the Bedford Sub, after the dimensional move spent the night in Rockingham Yard. This very large item was riding 12-axle flatcar QTTX 131102 at the same location. I'm not sure what the load weighed, but the car has a load capacity of 738,900 lbs.! A bit later that morning the dimensional train was in the Halifax cut and about to go under the Belmont-on-the-Arm bridge. The south track had less vertical clearance and was mostly just used by the passenger trains. It was taken out of service a couple years later. I worked for Shell Canadian Tankers back in the 1980"s and we went to this refinery for products and I don't remeber it being "Texaco" wasn't it owned by"Esso" ?
Esso also had a marine division... If I'm wrong sorry... Date: 10/21/24 17:33 Re: Refinery Remnants Author: cn6218 There were two refineries. the larger one was Imperial Oil, or Esso. The smaller was Texaco, later Ultramar. Both are now gone, although the tanks remain as a storage facility. Some time in the last 10 years, Ultramar became Valero.

For those that don't know a large number of Sawmills, paper mills and refineries have been packaged up and sold to foreign countries, not necessarily as competing or reducing costs but often separate markets that wants to make their own lumber, paper or oil products. t4p.
