Canadian Railroads > Londonderry, NS Control PointDate: 01/23/25 08:38 Londonderry, NS Control Point Author: cn6218 On September 26, 2009 CN train 120, led by a quartet of GMD products, was coasting down Folly Mountain and passing the Londonderry control point near mile 17 of the Springhill Sub. Until the early 2000s, this had been a siding, but once CN was finished storing hi-cube boxcars here during the 2000 recession, it was ripped up and only the mainline signals at the east end were kept. Because these signals can display an absolute stop (no "R" plate), they can be used as one limit of a track foreman's Track Occupancy Permit (TOP), and the RTC has more granularity on the CTC display to tell where trains are. Two years ago, these searchlights were replaced by LED signals and moved about a mile to the east, but the location is still known as Londonderry.
Londonderry was once the connection to a narrow gauge railway that served iron mines and coke ovens in the area. The railway makes what appears to be a large bend to run through the village on the way over the Cobequid Mountains. Sandford Fleming has taken a lot of heat, at least historically, for re-routing the ICR to accomodate mining interests in the area, But since almost all of that large bend is on a 1% ascending grade, it would seem that the extra length was needed anyway. The train shown here will drop down a 1.2% grade for about a mile before crossing the East Mines Trestle at mile 14.5.
