Is there a derailment or some other catastrophe on CN in BC? I have been tracking The Canadian of late in preparation for an upcoming trip. VIA's tracking shows it has been stuck nine minutes east of Clearwater for well more than 12 hours and is now behind more than 18 hours.

Terminated there due to a freight derailment, with passengers bussed to Vancouver, per the VIA subreddit.

Has Reddit become the new Yahoo Groups? Below from a post on there, a good time had by all:

Timeline:

8 pm - whispers of the train ahead of us being derailed. The PA system is down, so we hear bits and pieces from different staff. They tell us to be ready to get on a bus at 11

11:30 pm - no bus yet, told that they are delayed because of ice and fog

1:40 am - went to find an attendant to ask where tf is the bus. She said there was a miscommunication and the buses left Kelowna at 11 to reach us. Says the bus will be there in less than an hour.

2:40 am - wake up call to get on the bus

3:30 am - first bus is loaded and leaves. Time unknown - stop at a truckstop in Kamloops less than 2 hours into the drive

6:30 - stop in traffic on Coquihalla highway

7:30 - current time, sun is rising, still stuck

The lack of communication was astounding. They wasted precious few hours when we could have slept by not updating us.

You have every right to vent. It’s a shi##y situation we’re all in, so by all means. Also sorry to hear y’all are stuck on the highway. Bus 2 took a detour after we found out about y’all, so we’re now in Merritt.

Also I should note that while chatting with Julie, the train manager, last night, she said that there was some horrible miscommunication about the busses last night. It turns out when they said 11:30, what the bus people meant was they were leaving Kelowna at 11:30. They didn’t find out about that until much later, and with the PA system down, there was only so much they could do to relay what little information they had.

I have every reason to believe the VIA on board service people did the best they could in what was a bad situation - PA down, etc.
