Freight Car Friday - Some CN Containers
Author: feclark

Please excuse this less than dazzling post. Two weeks ago, Friday, April 25, I got out for a few hours to use my camera for the first time since July 25, 2024. One of the two trains I shot was CN Z100, Calgary to Montreal. The location is on the Wainwright Sub at Range Road 225, MP 253.6.
1. CNRU 241327 53' container is atop CNRU 240697 in the 'We Deliver' livery, both with corrugated side panels, riding DTTX 765554C 53' well car.
2. CNRU 287777 53' temperature-controlled container is atop FANU 328830_3 Hapag-Lloyd 45G1, riding DTTX 748730D [?] 40' well car. Notice the strip of safety striping on the CN container, warning people of the projecting thermal unit. As these containers rolled past, I was struck by the apparent variation in the red-orange hue, seen best on the CN logo on the first one, and the three-modes graphic on the second one. I wasn't sure if this was a trick of the changing light angle, or something real.
Here's the link to a much older post of mine showing a couple of the thermal containers, with diagonally opposite views: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?15,4811069,4811069#msg-4811069
The main reason for this post is my attempt to submit my photos in a way that sees a sharper result on TO. I got these files down from 11 MB to well under 400 KB, but I see they show up as larger files, over 400 KB, in the info as I post them. I don't know what to make of that. Going to rip my thinning hair out soon, dealing with computer hoops. Anyway, I'll see what they look like once I finish the post. Comments and helpful suggestions welcome. I don't see any point to continuing posting sharp images that end up looking fuzzy. I've been lazy for too long.

They may be everyday containers but few realize the everyday containers used in Canada don't look like everyday containers used in the USA and again not like Europe, South America and the rest of the world. I beleive Canada has the longest domestic containers and also some of the most interesting paint schemes.

re posting photos, TO apparently has a file compressor s/w that reduces everything to 1000 pixels in any direction. It's thought that it introduces noise which looks like a fuzzy photo. A number of TO posters use their own PSE or similar to reduce the file to less than 1000 pixels to avoid the TO compressor. actually 999 in hopes of avoiding whatever it is that happens.

Some folks think it works. I'm looking at some of the newer scans and camera files that seem to be markedly better than older images. Not really sure anymore.

Personally, I have always reduced ALL TO files to 300x1000. You are right, on a trip where my laptop gave up the ghost, along with photoshop, I tried posting big jpegs directly from the camera and it worked just fine as TO reduced thme for me, and, in MY case, they didn't seem to loose any sharpness.

Should also say I'm seeing changes in color from newer cameras, especially high end cell phone images. Not just better resolution but the color contrast or color of noise perhaps is presented differently. Some of this could be the illusion of color or clarity. Basically there is something different in newer images.

There has been huge leaps in consumer cameras or electronics, which has enabled the move to high end cell phones and the mirror-less cameras. Which translates to manufacturing efficiencies and higher resolution of profits.

On April 18th in Portland, Oregon, I passed by this colorful CN Container on the Interstate.

You reacted more quickly than I could, to get the shots. I notice the magic marker reporting marks on what otherwise represented a big effort to produce this container.

Interesting container chassis, three axles with duals on them plus two retractable tag axles too. Super heavy containers or is it super crappy roads?
