MLW Monday - Out to Pasture
Author: cn6218

I made another trip to the Gaspé last week, and this time found some trains that were moving.

But in the Campbellton, NB yard these four RS-18-3s appeared to be out of service.  The Societé du Chemin de Fer de la Gaspésie has leased some Helm GP38-2s (former GP40s)., sidelining the MLWs.  We found 3 of the EMDs in Matapédia, and two of them left with train 575 on the morning of May 20.  RS-18-3 1868 was along for the ride, but not running, for the train of empty woodchip and cement cars.  GP38-2s HLCX 1067 and 1073 were powering the train, shown here at Sillarsville, QC.  HLCX 1069 was left behind in Matapédia, along with RS-18u 1865.

Although the crew said they would be going all the way to New Richmond that day, things didn't go exactly as planned, and they only made it to Nouvelle (about 40 miles east).  We were waiting at this small trestle, rebuilt about 15 years ago after a washout, but the train never made it this far (mile 41).  There are still some wooden piles at each end of the bridge, but most of it has been replaced with steel, even if the construction style is similar.  I suspect there may be another GP38-2 (I shot 1054 in March) at New Richmond, the current end of operable track, but we didn't go any farther east than mile 41.

A shame to see the MLW's out of service. Hopefully they'll live on ... maybe Sartigan will take one or two, maybe the D-L roads could use some smaller power. They've been heavily rebuilt, probably the ultimate "alcos" at this point, in a way.
