How does that work in Canada - say the members vote down the tentative agreement, or have they already voted yes  ?

Indeed, the members could reject the tentative settlement.  In past labour disputes with VIA,  the  members have accepted the union's recommendation.

A strike at VIA could be a long one.  It is doubtful the federal government would enact legislation to end it. In recent years, when there has been a national railway strike involving the freight railways as well as VIA, there has been quick back-to-work legislation.  If it is just VIA on strike, the effect on the economy would be minimal compared to a full rail shut-down.  As one VIA union member said to me several years ago: the government would save a bundle with VIA shut down.

The members will vote in the "coming weeks."

Thanks for the info.  A VIA shutdown at this summer time of year would be bad.  Many passengers cancelled out?
