What to see/do Winnipeg to Calgary
Author: PumpkinHogger

Planning a drive this autumn via International Falls to Winnipeg, and west on the TransCan to Calgary to pay a friend a visit.

Will then turn south (have been west of Calgary already) leaving the greatest country in North America for Yellowstone and other points below the 49th parallel.

Following the CP as I never rode it and can't; want to put some face to places heard of along the way.

Advice on any railfan points of interest as well any other things worth seeing and doing along way welcome.

TIA

The Brooks Aqueduct is an interesting spot, and it's possible to work a morning eastbound into a shot including the aqueduct. Prior to that the CPR station at Medicine Hat is extant, and usable as a photo prop. Much of the Maple Creek and Brook Subs are straightforward guardrail railfanning, relatively boring but typical prairie railroading.

Coming south from Calgary there's the bridge at Carmangay, as well as the bridge at Lethbridge, the largest (by combination of length and height) steel trestle in the world.

The Winnipeg Railway Museum has had some challenges and is still a work in progress but it is well worth a visit.

Prairie Dog Central reportedly has their 4-4-0 steam locomotive back in service, a really wonderful operation.

Alberta Railway Museum has a great collection but a 200 mile drive north from Calgary might be a stretch for most, we made the time and I’m glad we did.

Any wooden grain elevators still left?  I haven't driven that route in 20 some years

Thanks all, much appreciated.

Contemplating going through Rouleau SK aka Dog River where TV show Corner Gas was based, but most all the locations have been torn down, including the grain elevator.

The grain elevator in Grenfell, Sk is wooden.
Located on Saskatchewan Ave. I saw a note
(which i can't find
anymore) saying it is either the last, or the
largest elevator still operating in Sask.

Thanks for the update.
May I suggest another location to check out.
Pasqua, about 5 miles, roughly, east of Moose  Jaw.
Junction of the Indian Head Sub and
the Weyburn Sub. The Weyburn Sub heads
south to the N Dakota border. "Dog River" is 24.7
miles South of Pasqua.
