20 Years Ago Today on the Bedford Sub
Author: cn6218

The weather today in Halifax was very similar to what it had been 20 years ago on December 14, light snow falling throughout the day. While there was only one train into Halifax today (Z120), I was able to shoot two of them two decades ago, and within half an hour of each other,.

I forget the exact sequence of events, but the first photo I have on the hard drive was train 148, the daily Chicago-Halifax intermodal, entering the Transfer track at Millview, about 09:15.  This train usually arrived before daybreak, so the inclement weather may have delayed it a bit. Along with 2592 leading (recently rebuilt as AC44C6M 3320), and SD75I 5695, 1967-built IC SD40-2R 6002 was in third position.  It was retired, along with the rest of that group in 2009-2010.

Meanwhile a mile and a half ahead on the Transfer track, train 120 was pulling into Rockingham Yard at the Birch Cove switch.  It must have been rather short (perhaps also because of the weather), because 148 can be seen across the cove, just to the right of that abandoned power pole.  It would be unusual to have two trains on the transfer track at the same time, but both would have received restricting signals at Millview, so would be proceeding with due caution.

Great images, thanks Geoff!

I didn't manage to take any pictures around Rockingham yard during my lightning visit to Halifax in late October but I recognised many spots thanks to your excellent posts.
