Intermodal Monday - Side-Door Containers
Author: feclark

This one is a bit stale-dated, but I shot on CN's Edson Sub, west of Edmonton, on Monday, September 22, 2025. Late in the day, 1617, I shot CN stack train #104 coming up to Carvel, AB. In the consist were some racy-looking but clean containers in designer shades of cream or grey. What got my attention were the side doors, and container designations I had not seen before.
1. This is TROU 688165_0, a 45G1 container, i.e. 40', end doors only, atop MMPU 107343_5, a 45G3 with side doors as well, riding DTTX 786267B, a 53' well car. What does the diagonally-opposite side have? I can't see.
2. The clue might be in this pair. LYGU 416999_0 is a 45G3, presumably side doors on the other side (right side, if the end door is rear, away from the camera), atop LYGU 417159_7, another 45G3 showing side doors on the right side, end door visible. They're riding DTTX 62307D [?], a 48' [?] well car.
3. The side-door configuration also exists in 20' format. This shows end-door only, conventional 20' container KBRU 2571xx_x, class 22G1, beside ZXJU 023032_8, a side-door 20' 22G2 container, riding DTTX 759075C, a 40' well car.
I had never noticed these before, but they've probably been around for a while. Not too long, though, they were nearly pristine.

Interesting finds, thanks for sharing!

The Intermodal Container Web Page (great resource) indicates that LYGU is a reporting mark for Dong Fang, ZXJU is Qingdao Ruijunyuan Industry Trade Co and MMPU is Qingdao Double Friend Logistics Equipment

I had never seen such containers. Thanks for posting these views, and for the related info to develop. Very interesting indeed.

The US Military uses containers like this in both 20 and 40 foot lengths.

I'm guessing they don't use these Chinese-ownership ones ;)

The Army had a zillion of them - CONEX boxes.  I remember back in the 60s and 70s seeing plenty of them, and most were shorter than 20s - maybe 8 to 10 ft long, and of course, all painted OD.
They've been around for a long time - maybe 70 years. But until today I had never seen a 40 footer with doors everywhere.
Thanks for posting the photos.

The old CONEX boxes are long gone. You might find one somewhere on post being used for storage these days.
20 and 40 foot containers have been used since the first Gulf War (1990). The Army and Marines have PLS trucks (Pallet Loading System) trucks that can pick up and transport a 20 foot container just about anywhere.  As for 40 foot containers with side doors they're out there. There's three of them on the Flight Line of the Los Alimitos Army Airfield in California. They belong to the Aviation Units there.
