Nice view Bob , thanks !  It was an interesting time for passenger trains  :  Tempo trains , TurboTrains , Metroliners and the NYC's Empire Service - which one would be the future ?

Empire Service wasn't much to look at. Most trains had a single E unit and two coaches, three if you were lucky.

Cool shot Bob.  One of two RS18's rebuilt to RS18u's specifically for Tempo service.  They must have been re-geared because I remember these units going by at 80 to 90 mph on a few trips to the Montreal area when I was a kid.

There were six Tempo RS18's. CN also had 30 RS18's with 80 mph gearing and through steam lines.

Just to note the 6 Tempo RS-18's were HEP while the RS-18's with the 80 mph gearing needed a locomotive(s) with a steam generators ahead of it.  When 3151 & 3153 lost their alternators CN had 3 baggage cars rebuilt to power cars (EGUs) painted silver to match the 1968 HS Tempo cars.   With the advent of the EGUs now any passenger geared locomotive could pull a Tempo train.  Here we have one of those above mentioned RS-18s, 3118 on the point of VIA No.73 at Paris Jct, ON 30.9 CN Dundas sub on March 7th, 1983.  The EGU is 15302 nee-CNR 9272.   My photo.

3118 is probably 73 as it is westbound.
