Canadian Railroads > MLW Monday

CP M-630 4565, GO Transit (ex CRI&P) GP40 720, CP C-630M 4500 leading
CP train 505 at milepost 150 Belleville sub in early May 1992.
4500-4507 were C-630Ms and the remainder of the 4500s were M-630s.

Both MLWs in this photo were retired in 1993, but the 4500 ended up as
Arkansas & Missouri 70 and subsequently WNYP 630 in 2003. It's now on
display in Meadsville PA apparently.

I used hang out here on Friday nights in the late eighties to late nineties
to watch the action on CP and the parallel CN Kingston sub. Accessed 
from between the twin wooden bridges at Nichols Road, Newtonville.
Thus my handle "newtonville150".

Notice the differences in the air filter boxes right behind the cabs on the 2 ALCO's.  The one in front almost looks like the boxes have been closed off.

I'd have to rummage and then scan, but I can start you on the right track with this shot I scanned for a post several years ago. The lead unit is the M-630 as built, the trailer a C-630M as built. CP was dissatisfied with the breathing/filtering on these units, and tried a number of modifications. I think all the C-630Ms got the same mod, which comprised a boxy area with four subsections, each with a pair of 'standard' square Alco/MLW filters that angled in to form a V. They were exposed (at least usually). CN also did the same to their C-630Ms, so it may have been an MLW mod. On CP, they tried a few variations for the M-630, but didn't apply them to all units. The one in the photo would have two horizontal rows comprising 5 square filters, covered by a metal panel that is riddled with small slots arranged in vertical rows, grouped in three rows per filter or thereabouts. So they could breathe. You may be able to find shots on the web.
