Canadian Railroads > Kodak Instamatic Memory

TH&B 73 & 74 leading the "East Local" on the diamond at E&O. The east local finished switching the big fertilizer plant at Port Maitland and is running north to Smithville and then west to Aberdeen Yard in Hamilton. A sunny warm afternoon in southern Ontario and my "Kodak Instamatic Memory" from June 17, 1971.

The TH&B units were well maintained by them at Chatham St.

We used to get 3 of the them on the Kinnear, and 3 Conrail units, usually GP38(-2)'s or smaller GE's on the other set.

We never had a problem with the TH&B's until CP closed Chatham St and moved their maintenance base to Toronto Yard.

All downhill from there.

CP retired them in the early 1980's where they remained parked  at John St shops in downtown Toronto.

Eventaully, 72-77 and 401-403 were rebuilt and renumbered by CP to 1682-1690 and served many more years in yard service.

I worked on them all, as TH&B units and later as CP units after rebuild, when I still worked in Toronto.

Little did I know at the time of this photo, one year later I would make several trips on the TH&B East Local and through this location as a newly hired Brakeman.  I worked on the TH&B January 1972 to February 1973 and then went west to British Columbia Railway., 1973 to 2009.
