Canadian Railroads > BC Paper Mills, Forest Products and Jobs Article

Reading an article about the remaining Paper Mills on Vancouver Island and found another article about Domtar and it's Mills closing around the Province. At one time forest products were a large part of the Railroad Business but is becoming a footnote in comparison to Intermodal. Looks like the number of Paper Mills is in the single digits and becoming very specialized in contrast to the huge Newsprint market of decades past. Perhaps this should have been on the N&H Board.

Original Vancouver Island Paper Mill article, because of the Island location Forest Products is a limited contributor to rail but had been a interesting source of traffic in the past. It appears to be more Ocean based now.

Interesting post, quite a bit structural changes in the paper business in North America. Like other big industries as well, think of steel. One large printing firm I worked for years ago used so much paper that they used to keep one of Fraser's mills (in the northeast) busy pretty much by themselves. Now, at a different place we get most of our paper from overseas, including the fine papers. So different...

And there's a lot less 8.5 by 11 paper in use as well.
