Have you heard of the Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, Nevada? I am sure you have, but in case you haven’t it is neat oasis in the most isolated part of Nevada. My family visited last weekend and we had the best family vacation running Mason’s handcar across the railroad. I stumbled onto a gem that many enthusiasts have known about for years that we only recently experienced. I want to share this place with others by encouraging our members to visit by offering a $100 scholarship towards the Railroad Reality camp this summer to any member that wishes to attend.

In summary, this program is an eight day hands on training course that teaches the tasks of running a railroad. The program includes training on rules, train operation, track maintenance, along with locomotive and equipment maintenance. Although the first day is classroom rule training, after that it is all hands on. The program is designed for the novice and no experience is necessary. You do need to be physically capable to climb into the cab of a steam and diesel locomotive to participate.

I will admit Ely, Nevada is in the middle of nowhere. From Southern California Las Vegas is the halfway point. However, you do not need to drive as Ely is part of the Essential Air Service Program, and you can inexpensively fly there from Las Vegas aboard Great Lakes Airlines. The next session is August 17 – 25 and there are only six slots remaining. There is plenty of time to get those air reservations in order. Car rentals are also available at Ely airport.

The program runs $845 for museum members (only $30 to join) and with our $100 scholarship this drops the cost down to $745.

Tuition does NOT include lodging, but for an extra charge you can stay in the recently refurbished bunk house which just received new beds last week. There are also several hotels within town from the flea bag budget hovel type to the modern multi story suite hotel.

For this year I am offering six scholarships to Trainorders.com members that have been a member of the site since the date and time of this announcement. If you want to participate you will need to send us an email first at help@trainorders.net so we can verify there are still scholarship opportunities available. Then you will book with the Nevada Northern Railway directly. Once we receive confirmation that you have registered we will issue the scholarship payment directly to the Nevada Northern Railway.
