Greek ferry to Italy rail and Bernina Express
Author: palmland

We will be taking the ferry from Patras to Ancona, Italy this summer. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get from the ferry to the station in Ancona?

Later we'll take the Bernina Express into Swizwerland. Any suggestions to make that connection from Milan and tips on the trip?

IIRC the main station in Ancona is near the docks. In terms of your other question my latest European Rail Timetable (which is Summer 2015) shows a regular service from Milan to Tirano operated by Trenord, taking about two and a half hours for the 100 miles. You may want to buy a more up to date copy to verify that's still the case

According to Google Maps, at worst it would be a 1 to 1.5 mile walk at sea level, depending on which dock you arrive at.  One would think buses or taxis would be available, too.

According to Tripadvisor bus 12 connects the ferry port to the station.

I have. In fact traded emails with him. He's more familiar with th ferry to Bari rather than Ancona. But Ancona is closer to our first destination, Florence.

Seat61 has great info, that's why we decided on the Bernina route out of Italy.

we took the Bernini Express last Sept on a beautiful day and this is one of the best train trips that I have been on.  There was one interesting climb up the side of a steep glacier created valley.  There were several cases where the train would enter a tunnel one direction, loop around and come out going the opposite direction at a higher altitude.  A trip that is well worth doing.

TreNord trains run mostly hourly from Milan Centrale to Tirano IT which is the southern end of the Bernina Express route. The two stations in Tirano are right next to each other; essentially a seamless connection.

BTW you gotta love the hi-res train info displays found on even the lowliest regional trains in Europe
