Some UK Steam
Author: Hartington

These first three are from near my home. Castle Cary station is about one mile east (to the right). The lead loco is 34052 Lord Dowding followed by 46100 Royal Scot. Taken on 6th May 2017.

Next 60163 Tornado (the one built from scratch). These were taken in rather wet conditions at Newbury Racecourse where water was taken. They pump it from a road tanker on the adjacent road. Taken on 16th May 2017.

IMHO, steam is steam and that is what really is important....I spent 18 months living in the UK while serving on active duty at RAF Greenham Common....in the late 80's steam was everywhere on tourist operations and mainline running...spent time at the Watercress Line, West Somerset and many others, plus ran a steam locomotive (1 1/2" scale) at a local county park near Reading.

Must be nice to be close to steam which is active on most weekends. With proper consists and no diesel assist which is so often the case here. Other than the iffy weather, what's not to like?

I don't recall 34052 Lord Dowding -- is that a temporary assumed identity? If not, where is it based?

I have to say I dislike this thing of changing the number. They've done it to one of the Westerns (diesel hydraulic); in fact I seem to remember at one time it was running around with one number/name on one side and a different one on the other.

DKay - we do get diesels "helping" but we put them at the very rear of the train usually. It's not totally unheard of for the diesel to be behind the steam loco, as in the US, but it is very unusual. And not all trains have a diesel.
